Summary
Ambulatory children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) are often candidates for multi-level orthopaedic surgery to correct their musculo-skeletal impairments associated with gait deviations and functional disability. Pre-operative decision is based on physical examination, visual/video inspection of gait, and 3-D gait analysis in a motion laboratory, which is not universally available or funded. The role of 3-D gait analysis for surgical decision-making is controversial due to a lack of evidence that functional outcomes are improved as a result of using gait analysis. Consequently, there is wide variation in the rates of access to, and utilization of, 3-D gait analysis across the United States & Canada.

This multi-centre study is a randomized trial evaluating the effectiveness of gait analysis for decision making and its impact on functional outcomes following multi-level orthopaedic surgery for children with ambulatory cerebral palsy. This project was awarded the 2006 Angela Kuo Memorial Young Investigator Award from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA).
