The Heart of the Lab

Paul Delgado Olguín, PhD
Paul Delgado Olguín, PhDPrincipal Investigator
Lijun Chi, PhD
Lijun Chi, PhDResearch Associate

Translational Medicine, SickKids Research Institute

Dr. Chi enormously contributes in multiple aspects to all the projects in our lab. In addition, Dr. Chi is investigating the function of histone methyltransferases that form part of epigenetic silencing complexes in the development of cardiovascular precursor cells and their descendants.

Abdalla Ahmed, PhD
Abdalla Ahmed, PhDResearch Fellow

Department of Molecular Genetics, U of T

Abdalla’s main focus is uncovering the earliest effects of obesity during pregnancy on the developing heart and the molecular events that program an increased risk of adult-onset heart disease. In a parallel project, Abdalla is investigating how abnormal methylation of histones controls initiation of cardiomyopathy.

Amalia Caballero
Amalia CaballeroPhD Candidate

Department of Molecular Genetics, U of T

Amalia is investigating how obesity during pregnancy affects gene expression in the early developing embryo.

Jibran Syed
Jibran SyedM.Sc. Student

Department of Molecular Genetics, U of T

Jibran is working on a new project investigating how noncoding RNAs are processed in the heart.

Sofia Wang
Sofia WangResearch Technologist

Translational Medicine, SickKids Research Institute

Sofia is characterizing the phenotype of two new mouse lines carrying mutations in a histone methyltransferase and chromatin remodeler, both affected in human disease. Sofia’s research will shed light on the function of epigenetic modifiers of gene expression in heart development and disease.
