Elise Lutchman
About me
I was born in Canada but spent my most important years in Trinidad and Tobago, the place I call home! I have always been interested in science and hope to work in pediatrics following medical school, I am particularly interested in oncology, neonatology or psychiatry.
Why Science
I have always excelled and been drawn to science courses, and was somewhat inspired by Grey’s Anatomy to love medicine… I love helping others and making a difference. I enjoy asking questions, solving problems, and learning how discoveries in the laboratory can translate into better treatments and outcomes for patients. Science is constantly evolving, and I find it exciting to be part of a field where there is always something new to learn and explore.
What is your favourite part about working at the BTRC?
Although I have not been working in the lab for a long time my favourite part about working at the BTRC is being surrounded by an environment of researchers who are all passionately dedicated to advancing our understanding of pediatric brain tumours. It is very inspiring to see how collaborative research efforts can contribute to improving care for patients and their families. I have also enjoyed gaining hands-on experience in a research environment and learning about the process of translating scientific discoveries into meaningful clinical applications.
What advice do you have for anyone interested in a career in science?
My advice for anyone interested in a career in science would not to be afraid to ask questions and to stay curious. Science is not something that you will know all the answers to, its about being open to learn, explore and persist when things don’t go as planned. Seek all the opportunities to gain hands-on experience, and remember that rejection is redirection! Lastly, keep an open mind, as some of the more valuable experiences can come from unexpected opportunities.
Hobbies and interests?
Outside of academics, I enjoy staying active, spending time with family and friends, traveling, exploring new places and getting a sweet treat! Through my experiences in research and healthcare, I hope to contribute to advancements that improve patient outcomes while continuing to develop as a future physician.
If a celebrity were to play you in a movie about your life, who would it be and why?
Either Taylor Swift or Gracie Abrams, not just because I love them both but they would be able to put every aspect and emotion of my life into clear words. They would understand me lol.
