Calista Bordonali
About me
I am a third-year Life Sciences student at Queen’s University with an interest in neuroscience and pediatric brain research. I joined the Rutka Lab as a SickKids Summer Research (SSuRe) student in the summer of 2026 to gain hands-on research experience and learn more about translational research in pediatric medicine. Outside of the lab, I enjoy dance, staying active, and getting involved in student leadership initiatives.
Why Science
I have always been drawn to science because there is always more to discover, with new research continuously changing the way we understand health and disease. The brain, in particular, has always fascinated me because of its complexity and the many unanswered questions surrounding how it functions. As I have gained more academic and research experience, including my work in the Rutka Lab, I have become increasingly invested in contributing to scientific advancements that can help transform the way we understand and treat disease.
What is your favourite part about working at the BTRC?
My favourite part about working at the BTRC has been being surrounded by so many passionate and driven individuals who are dedicated to improving outcomes for pediatric patients. It is incredibly inspiring to learn from people who are not only advancing research, but are deeply committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families.
What advice do you have for anyone interested in a career in science?
I would encourage anyone interested in a career in science to stay curious and keep an open mind. The more you learn, the more you realize how much there is still left to discover, so don’t be afraid to ask questions or try new opportunities. Most importantly, remember what first sparked your interest in science and let that continue to motivate you along the way.
Hobbies and interests?
Outside of science, I love dance and performing and have been involved in it since I was 3 years old! I also enjoy staying active, getting involved on campus through leadership and orientation, and supporting charitable initiatives that allow me to give back to my community.
If a celebrity were to play you in a movie about your life, who would it be and why?
I’d say Taylor Swift, partly because I’m a fan, but also because I feel like she could turn any aspect of my daily life into a pretty entertaining song :)
