We live in an unprecedented time where it is estimated that approximately 350 million people worldwide are affected by rare disease. A rare disease is defined as “a condition affecting fewer than 1 in 2,000 people.”

Researchers have made groundbreaking discoveries over the last few years in this area and have helped diagnose over 7,000 rare diseases in Canada alone. However, there is so much more we can do.

In collaboration with The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), CARE for RARE and other Canadian rare disease organizations, Can-GARD (Canadian Gene Cure Advanced Therapies for Rare Disease) is committed to bridging clinical and basic research across Canada. Can-GARD will focus efforts to ensure that every individual and family living with a rare disease receives faster and accurate diagnosis, which may improve the quality of life for some.

Barriers impeding progress on translating and implementing novel therapies for patients, have been identified. We are ready to begin. Through the pillars of education, training and research, we help innovators such as SickKids to be at the forefront of both gene discovery and therapy development.

Can-GARD is about to usher in an era where the exceptional becomes routine, and the process from diagnosis to treatment becomes a reality for rare disease.
