Sergio Simoes

About me

I am a Cell and Developmental Biologist (PhD in 2007, University of Lisbon, Portugal) who spent many years having fun with Drosophila Genetics, Molecular Biology and Confocal Imaging of embryos as a model for fundamental cancer cell research. During my two Posdocs at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, NY and at UofT, I learned a few things: to observe, to think, to love what I do and to be patient. In the process, I published some cool papers and made a multitude of friends. My latest chapter is the Rutka Lab, where I am a Lab Research Coordinator.

Why Science?

Is there anything more exciting and satisfactory than trying to figure out the unknown? And if that translates into helping others and making an impact in people’s lives, ultra-bonus!

What is your favourite part about working at the BTRC?

This is a very multi-disciplinary research centre focused on tackling the main types of pediatric brain tumours in multiple fronts: molecular characterization, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis. The abundance of scientific discussion, the many opportunities for learning, the direct involvement of clinicians in cutting-edge research and the incredible infrastructure, facilities and support make the BTRC a unique place to be part of. I am ultra-honoured to work here.

What advice do you have for anyone interested in a career in science?

Learn as much as you can, be multidisciplinary, be curious, discuss with others, be hands-on, develop a clear vision, spend many hours understanding what are the most pertinent questions that will have the most impact on people’s lives or in the advancement of your field. Don’t be afraid to try. Often the answer is in bringing different fields together that typically are distant from each other.

Hobbies and interests?

They have been changing over the years. I love swimming, hiking, reading – novels, biographies, news, I need a constant supply. I love learning: just for fun, I started a Google Data Analytics on-line course. I have a soft spot for social causes, having been part of groups that fight poverty. Lately, I’m into home fitness, you know, one kettlebell and dropping dead in 20 min… Keeping bonds and spending quality time with family and friends is also very very dear to me.

If a celebrity were to play you in a movie about your life, who would it be and why?

Ryan Reynolds. I mean, we have the same self-deprecating humor and level of handsomeness, don’t we? LOL.
