Michael Edson

About me

I grew up in a small town in Ontario north of Muskoka with my parents and twin sister. I’ve developed a passion for science growing up and fostered this passion in my undergraduate degree where I had the opportunity to join research labs through two co-op positions and a fourth year research project.

Why Science

I always excelled in science classes growing up, and gained an interest in biology and the study of diseases. With several of my family members being afflicted with cancer throughout the years, I naturally gravitated towards this field of research. I love the idea of having a team ask a question that will improve our understanding of cancer, and then performing hands on experiments to find out the answer. It is truly rewarding to be part of a team full of experts from several fields to complete various wet-lab, in vitro, and in vivo techniques in the pursuit of testing a hypothesis.

What is your favourite part about working at the BTRC?

The welcoming environment, collaborative spirit between labs, and the combined goal of improving care to pediatric brain tumour patients. The BTRC team is composed of highly skilled and motivated individuals, who work within a hospital that is teaming with shared resources and core facilities that support our research goals.

What advice do you have for anyone interested in a career in science?

Try to join a summer student, co-op, or fourth year research program during your undergraduate degree to get an idea of what in science interests you the most, and to gain valuable wet lab skills.

Hobbies and interests?

Outside of work, I keep active by jogging, biking, and hitting the gym. I like to go to concerts, watch movies, and travel around the world with my wife. I also have a cat that I spend time with.

If a celebrity were to play you in a movie about your life, who would it be and why?

Channing Tatum. We are practically doppelgangers.
