Principal Investigator
Daniela Rotin, PhD
Dr. Daniela Rotin is a Senior Scientist at the Cell Biology Program at SickKids Research Institute and a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. She is also the co-director of the SPARC Drug Discovery facility at SickKids Research Institute. She received her PhD at the Ontario Cancer Institute in Toronto, and carried out Postdoctoral Fellowships at SickKids (with Dr. Sergio Grinstein), and at NYU Medical Center in New York (with Dr. Joseph Schlessinger).
Dr. Rotin’s work focuses on protein degradation by the ubiquitin system and its effect on transmembrane proteins, especially the epithelial sodium channel ENaC, ion transporters and growth factor receptors, such as the FGFR1. A particular focus of her research is the role of protein degradation in human diseases, such as Liddle Syndrome/hypertension, cancer, and cystic fibrosis. Relevant to the latter, she also studies the relationship between ENaC and CFTR.
Dr. Rotin has received numerous awards, including the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) Young Investigator award and CIHR Investigator award, a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Biochemistry and Signal transduction from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), and several awards from Cystic Fibrosis Canada (CFC) and ICRF. She has been supported by numerous CIHR grants (including a recently-awarded CIHR Foundation grant), NSERC, CFC and HFSP grants. She also obtained two large CFI infrastructure grants.
Dr. Rotin has been serving on several grant review panels, such as the CIHR (Cell Physiology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Cell Biology & Mechanisms of Disease and Cancer panels), NCIC, ICRF, European Union (ERC), and has been on the Editorial Board of AJP (Renal) and Frontiers in Physiology. She was the co-organizer of a previous APS ENaC/Aldosterone conference in Banff, Canada, and the recent co-organizer of the MR/ENaC meeting in Estes Park, Colorado, USA.
