MAGIC is a SickKids-based consortium of clinicians, scientists, and pathologists from over <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">85<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> cities around the world who have collectively contributed frozen medulloblastoma samples to the genomics efforts in Toronto.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Medulloblastoma is a not a single disease<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Medulloblastoma is an embryonal tumour of the cerebellum that was thought to represent a single disease entity. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Data from the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Taylor Lab <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and others, and accepted in an international consensus statement, Taylor et. al 2011 have agreed that MB is in fact comprised of four molecularly distinct diseases that have their own epidemiology, demographics, clinical presentation, transcriptional profile, somatic genetic events, and clinical outcomes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wnt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (due to hyperactivity of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wnt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> signaling)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (due to hyperactivity of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> signaling)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Group 3<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Group 4<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;45px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;530&#8243; img_size=&#8221;medium&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow_3d&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221; css_animation=&#8221;fadeIn&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Medulloblastoma is extremely heterogenic<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">More recently we have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> demonstrated that medulloblastoma is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">even more heterogenic than thought and may in fact be up to 12 different diseases<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cancer Cell, 2017; Nature, 2017) and that there is clinically significant heterogeneity in metastatic medulloblastomas (Nature, 2012, 2016; Nature Genetics, 2017). <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We have also shown that these<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> cerebellar tumours are a disorder of early brain development, a finding which provides a proximate explanation for the peak incidence of cerebellar tumours in early childhood (Nature, 2019).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Current medulloblastoma research<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ur current research is focused on metastases<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ecause t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">main <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cause of death from MB is not the primary tumour, but rather the metastases that arise from the primary tumour<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
