Name: Melissa Galati
Lab Position: PhD Candidate
Degree: H.B.Sc.
What’s your background?
Hi there, my name is Melissa and I’m a PhD Candidate in the Tabori lab. I was born and raised here in Toronto and completed my HBSc at McGill University studying Anatomy and Cell Biology before starting my PhD in the Tabori lab in 2015.
What research projects are you currently working on?
My research focuses on creating animal models of replication repair deficiency (RRD) so we can study and learn more about the cancers that children with RRD get. My goal is to model the different cancers typically seen in children with RRD including brain tumors, GI cancers, and hematological malignancies. Developing robust models is important to learn more how these tumors develop, what other factors influence how and when they develop, and ultimately test potential treatments preclinically.
Do you have any advice for someone interested in a career in research?
Celebrate victories – no matter how small. It’s no secret that research takes time, patience, and resilience – but there are small victories and discoveries happening around you every day. Enjoy yours and the discoveries of others.
