What’s your research background?
My research is focused on investigating a novel genetic mutation in the promoter of MSH2 recently discovered to cause replication repair deficient cancer. I have optimized and performed multiple functional assays that demonstrate the negative impact of this novel mutation on mismatch repair function. I am currently working on using patent-derived induced pluripotent stem cells and organoids and molecular biology techniques to investigate the molecular mechanism by which this novel mutation ablates mismatch repair.
Do you have any advice for someone interested in a career in research?
My advice for someone interested in pursuing research is to understand that research requires patience, focus and perseverance to get reliable and consistent results, particularly with wet lab work. Having a strong understanding of the complexity of the biological concepts you are investigating, and careful planning of experimental design will significantly impact experimental success. Having a passion for biology and problem solving is imperative for the dedication that a career in research requires.
What are your interests outside of science?
I am a dancer of 26 years who represented Western University during my Bachelors degrees as a member of the Varsity and competitive dance teams, and the University of Toronto on their competitive dance team during my first two years of graduate school. I love musical theatre and recently performed in the University of Toronto Medical School Musical, DaffyDil. I have also been heavily involved in mental health advocacy, serving as the Co-Chair of the University of Toronto GSU Mental Health Committee for 3 years as well as starting the Mental Health and Wellness Committee for the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto.
What’s your favorite food?
As an Italian I love Italian food, especially pasta with parmesan cheese! I’m also know for my huge sweet tooth!
Do you prefer coffee, tea, or none?
