What’s your background?
I was born in the United States, but my background is Turkish. I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto as a health & disease major with a minor in immunology and physiology. I am currently doing my master’s degree in medical sciences at the University of Toronto as well.
What research projects are you currently working on?
My research is focused on the clinical and biological landscape of constitutional mismatch repair deficiency (CMMRD) syndrome. Previously, I studied the impact and effectiveness of implementing surveillance on patients with CMMRD. Currently, my focus is on establishing the clinical manifestations of CMMRD patients and their related cancers, analyzing the characteristics of these cancers, and exploring a potential genotype-phenotype relationship in CMMRD.
Do you have any advice for someone interested in a career in research?
Choose a topic you have a genuine interest in and passion for. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s okay to not understand every concept or know the answer to every question! Remind yourself you are here to learn and having resilience and an eagerness to learn is most important.
What are your interests outside of science?
Outside of science, I am passionate about traveling, trying new foods, fashion, and art. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family and practicing Pilates.
What’s your favorite food?
I love food too much to choose… Maybe pasta, sarma (stuffed grape leaves), or grilled fish!
Do you prefer coffee, tea, or none?
I prefer coffee in the morning and tea in the evening.
