It demonstrated sufficient accuracy for the diagnostic coding of asthma collected largely from physician billings and indicated that an administrative diagnosis code of asthma was sensitive and specific for identifying children with asthma.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs nav-justified\" role=\"tablist\"><li role=\"presentation\"><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-9d472aed8c2a24da36e\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-&lt;strong&gt;asthmasurveillance&amp;healthoutcomesinchildren&lt;\/strong&gt;\" href=\"#tab-9d472aed8c2a24da36e\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\"><i class=\"fontawesome-icon fa fa-star\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"font-size:13px;\"><\/i><strong>Asthma Surveillance &amp; Health Outcomes in Children<\/strong><\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-&lt;strong&gt;asthmasurveillance&amp;healthoutcomesinchildren&lt;\/strong&gt;\" id=\"tab-9d472aed8c2a24da36e\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">We established Canada\u2019s first longitudinal surveillance program implemented to examine the burden of asthma on Ontario\u2019s children and on the provincial health care system. The report\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ices.on.ca\/Publications\/Atlases-and-Reports\/2004\/Burden-of-childhood-asthma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Burden of Childhood Asthma<\/a><\/em>\u00a0<\/span>described among Ontario children, aged 0 to 9 years, between 1994-95 and 1998-99:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Incidence and prevalence of asthma;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">All-cause mortality of children with asthma and the general population of children;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Physician visits and hospitalizations for asthma and all causes among children with asthma and the general population of children; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Seasonal and geographical variation of asthma hospitalizations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs nav-justified\" role=\"tablist\"><li role=\"presentation\"><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-bb103713da119fc304b\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-&lt;strong&gt;fullprovincialimplementationofasthmasurveillance(on-going)&lt;\/strong&gt;\" href=\"#tab-bb103713da119fc304b\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\"><i class=\"fontawesome-icon fa fa-star\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"font-size:13px;\"><\/i><strong>Full Provincial Implementation of Asthma Surveillance (on-going)<\/strong><\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-&lt;strong&gt;fullprovincialimplementationofasthmasurveillance(on-going)&lt;\/strong&gt;\" id=\"tab-bb103713da119fc304b\">\n<p>The asthma surveillance system has provided data on individuals aged 0-39 to support the ministry priorities (see report\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ices.on.ca\/Publications\/Atlases-and-Reports\/2006\/The-burden-of-asthma-in-Ontario\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Burden of Asthma in Ontario<\/a><\/em><\/span>, and paper in\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/www.longwoods.com\/content\/18644\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Healthcare Quarterly 2007<\/a><\/em><\/span>). In 2010, it was extended to individuals aged over 40 years. Data are currently being used to provide on-going assessments of the burden of asthma and health services delivered to asthmatics in Ontario while:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Stratifying information by Local Health Integration Networks (LHIN);<\/li>\n<li>Measuring the provision of care by primary health teams;<\/li>\n<li>Assessing if wait time was an issue for asthmatics to receive appropriate treatment (e.g. pulmonary function test, referrals to specialists etc.); and<\/li>\n<li>Linking and providing valuable follow-up data for other Ontario asthma plan of action initiatives.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><h2><span style=\"color: #0046ad\"><strong>Research Methodology<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Use of existing administrative databases (hospitalizations, physician billings, and emergency visits) to identify Ontarians with asthma through record linkage across all available databases.<\/li>\n<li>Longitudinal data analysis to assess outcomes over time.<\/li>\n<li>See more in <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/lab.research.sickkids.ca\/oasis\/how-the-research-was-done\/\">Methodology<\/a><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-10964","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.0 (Yoast SEO v27.0) -
