We are interested in seeing if metformin can:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Improve your cognitive (thinking) skills (such as memory)<\/li>\n<li>Stimulate new growth to repair damaged brain tissue (white matter)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row animation=&#8221;fadeInUp&#8221;][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"color: #882099\">What will my child need to do?<\/h4>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner content_placement=&#8221;middle&#8221;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/5&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;875&#8243; img_size=&#8221;100&#215;100&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;4\/5&#8243;][vc_column_text]Your child will be <strong>randomly assigned <\/strong>(50\/50 chance) to one of two groups: either metformin or placebo. A <strong>placebo<\/strong> is a tablet with no medicine in it. Depending on which group your child is assigned to, they will either take metformin or placebo tablets one or two times a day for 16 weeks. Neither you nor the study team will know if they are taking metformin or placebo. This is known as double-blind.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]During the study, you and your child will be asked to come to SickKids for 5 visits across 40 weeks. draw<\/li>\n<li>Receiving and counting tablets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: study?<\/h4>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner gap=&#8221;2&#8243;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]Your child can take part in the study if they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have finished primary therapy for medulloblastoma (min. 3 weeks after end of therapy)<\/li>\n<li>Are between 7 and 17 years of age<\/li>\n<li>Have English as their native language or has had at least two years of schooling in English<\/li>\n<li>Are able to swallow tablets either whole, crushed, or via feeding tube<\/li>\n<li>Meet criteria for adequate organ function<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]Your child <b><i>cannot<\/i><\/b> take part in the study if they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are unable to do an MRI without sedation<\/li>\n<li>Have an IQ &lt;60 on screening test*<\/li>\n<li>Have a known hypersensitivity to metformin<\/li>\n<li>Have unstable and\/or insulin-dependent (Type 1) diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Have a history of renal (kidney) disease or malfunction or congestive heart failure<\/li>\n<li>Are taking part in another cognitive rehabilitation intervention study<\/li>\n<li>Are currently using metformin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;vc_default&#8221;
