Rare systemic inflammatory disease

Systemic inflammatory disease (SID) refers to a broad group of conditions characterized by non-infectious, widespread inflammation involving more than one organ system. There are clear examples of monogenic (single gene) SID causes. We are conducting a multi-centre Canada-wide study of patients and families with SID. We are using genome-wide sequencing and cutting edge technologies, to improve our understanding and care of these diseases. Our SID research study has enrolled >600 participants, including patients and family members.

Systemic lupus erythematosus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, autoimmune disease resulting from both genetic and environmental factors. We are leading multi-center international studies to understand the biologic basis of SLE. This includes studies of the genetics and biologic mechanisms for signs, symptoms, outcomes, and complications of SLE in both children and adults and across multi-ethnic populations. Our SLE research studies have included >3000 participants, including patients and family members at SickKids and centres in Canada and internationally.

Neonatal lupus erythematosus

Neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) is a passively acquired autoimmune disease. It is due to the passage of Anti-Ro/La autoantibodies in the womb. NLE is a heterogeneous disease characterized by cardiac and non-cardiac features. The most severe NLE feature is congenital complete heart block (CHB) which is irreversible. Maternal autoantibodies are an essential but not sole factor for NLE. We are working to improve prediction, effective treatment, and understanding of long-term outcomes of NLE. Our NLE research study has enrolled >1200 participants, including mothers and children.
