In the neuroscience field, immuno-labeling of the c-fos protein has been used to study neuronal activity patterns in several vertebrate brain systems. Expression of c-fos is an indirect marker of neuronal activity because c-fos is often expressed when neurons fire action potentials. We have used the technique (see below) to explore frequency coding and spontaneous activity patterns\u00a0 in the auditory brainstem and midbrain.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:30px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_2 1_2 fusion-one-half fusion-column-first\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;width:48%; margin-right: 4%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-1 sep-underline sep-solid fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-sep-color:#000000;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;\"><p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0046ad\">Tonotopic organization in the auditory midbrain<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">We have developed a\u00a0c-fos immunolabeling\u00a0technique to study the tonotopic organization of the inferior colliculus (IC) in the chinchilla.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>FIGURE A<\/strong><\/span> <strong>shows a band of c-fos labeling in IC after stimulation with a 2 kHz tonal signal. We verified that the neurons in this region were responding best to 2 kHz as shown in the neural frequency tuning curve derived by single unit electrophysiological recording. The histogram plots the c-fos activity across the IC tonotopic axis.<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>FIGURE B<\/strong><\/span> <strong>shows the c-fos band after 6 kHz frequency stimulation. Again the right hand histogram shows the amount of labeling across the IC tonotopic array. Note in both figures A and B, the c-fos peak is flanked by regions of much reduced labeling. margin-right: 4%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Resting levels of spontaneous neural activity was measured using c-fos as a marker in both the brainstem\u00a0and the midbrain (inferior colliculus).
