We\u2019ve been working with two incredible student teams in Toronto and Kenya on a variety of projects. Including patients in research leads to\u00a0knowledge that is more likely to be relevant to patients and adopted into common practice. It is my hope that this work will shape the future of retinoblastoma research.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><u>Jamie Fujioka<\/u><br \/>\nMPH Candidate, University of Toronto<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1427 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/lab.research.sickkids.ca\/dimaras\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2017\/08\/Jamie-275x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lab.research.sickkids.ca\/dimaras\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2017\/08\/Jamie-200x218.png 200w, https:\/\/lab.research.sickkids.ca\/dimaras\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2017\/08\/Jamie-275x300.png 275w, https:\/\/lab.research.sickkids.ca\/dimaras\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2017\/08\/Jamie.png 382w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/>I am currently supporting the One Retinoblastoma World Map (www.1rbw.org), an online platform that maps existing retinoblastoma health services\u00a0across the globe. Currently, there are huge disparities in retinoblastoma survivorship between the developed and developing world.\u00a0This initiative is instrumental in identifying priority areas in need of resources and expertise, and fosters collaborative networks of care to ensure that every child with retinoblastoma can receive treatment. I feel blessed to be part of this project, as it has given me a real world perspective of how global collaboration and research\u00a0can be harnessed to reduce inequities facing children.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><u>Max Gelkopf<\/u><br \/>\nH.B.Sc. This project is important to me because I think it is essential to include all perspectives in research. In line with the patient engagement strategy there is truly great value in empowering the patient voice. As well, priority setting is an essential exercise that can direct finite resources in a manner that both maximizes public health benefits and drives health equity, a notion which I find incredibly powerful.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><u>Victoria Lee-Kim<\/u><br \/>\nB.M.Sc. I am helping to develop a novel biobank for the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at SickKids. Biobanking is at the forefront of translational research, personalized medicine, and targeted treatments.\u00a0 Its advantages in regard to sample integrity and quality are endless.\u00a0This is the first eye specific pediatric biobank in Canada I\u2019m excited to be part of such a unique endavour that can enhance internal and external collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><u>Arunan Selvarajah<\/u><br \/>\nH.B.Sc. By conducting a retrospective chart review, this study seeks to identify preventable causes of retinoblastoma \u201ctreatment failures\u201d at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). The findings of this study may inform SickKids retinoblastoma standard operating procedures. This work is important to me because there is a great potential impact that may improve retinoblastoma patient outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><u>Leslie Oldfield <\/u><br \/>\nM.Sc. I am collecting data through surveys and semi-structured interviews with healthcare professionals who deal directly with these genetic services. Understanding the issues related to the implementation of these clinical services is the first step to identifying areas for improvement and capacity-building in the future. I love working on this project because it\u2019s an important piece of the overall puzzle in creating better clinical care for patients with genetic disorders in Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><u>Kaiwen Xia<\/u><br \/>\nH.B.Sc. The project shed valuable insight regarding\u00a0the intersection of\u00a0technology and social progression, which I believe is a\u00a0crucial (but sometimes undervalued)\u00a0factor for aspiring\u00a0scientists\u00a0to consider when planning their trajectories.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><u>Hannah Girdler<\/u><br \/>\nH.B.Sc.
