This <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">five <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">5<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">year CIHR<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">funded project focuses on the use of MEG and MRI brain imaging in children recovering from stroke who may develop <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hemidystonia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or other motor disorders. We combine these neuroimaging measures with somatosensory<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">motor tasks in children <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ollowing their<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">post-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stroke to assess neuroplastic changes in specific brain regions that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">might <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">may<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> reveal the underlying cause<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of their dystonia. We also use cognitive assessments and inhibitory control tasks to assess the relationship between dystonia and poorer cognitive outcomes. Our hope is that these measures will reveal<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> underlying neural mechanisms of post-stroke motor disorders and provide better predictors of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">outcome <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recovery<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\"> data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This NSERC Discovery grant funded project focuses on neural mechanisms underlying<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0our ability to produce the complex speech sounds necessary for expressive language. Although hemispheric specialization for language is well established, the specific brain regions involved in the generation of speech sounds, and how these are related to speech sound disorders in adults and children is relatively understudied. Non-invasive brain imaging of speech related brain activity may provide more accurate diagnoses and treatment strategies in these populations.<\/span><span
